His nature as an avatar, however, prevents these qualities from being more than quirks: a pledged member of the Fraternity, there are none among the ranks of his brotherhood that can question his virtue or his loyalty. In combat, he is first to defend others, and in dealing with humans he is always the last to truly take the spotlight if he knows with absolute certainty that another can better act to save a soul.
His arrogance is earned, and his ego without rival but laid against the human race, for all his power Cal feels genuine inadequacy.
The result of a frenzied teenage union, Cal's parents were high school sweethearts, avatars both of them. The two went on to pledge...and both failed. As a result, Cal was adopted and raised by the Marshall family, growing up alongside future member of the Eye, Maurice Marshall.
Something of an unusual breed among avatars, Cal is a metamorph. Metamorphs tend to fall into two separate categories, shapeshifters and chameleons, both capable of changing their appearance and blending into the landscape through either physical change or alteration of their appearance. While chameleons can simply blend into their environment, Cal can physically change form to become any living entity, so long as it is organic. Unlike his chameleon cousins, he cannot become a nonliving, nonsentient object. In general, Cal favors animal forms, and has the added ability of being able to communicate with whatever animal's shape he is currently wearing.
